Warehouse Identification and Location Labelling Project
for a Pharmaceutical Distribution Centre in Liverpool
Operational accuracy, and long-term scalability
Fortega was engaged to provide specialist advice, guidance, and product specification for a large-scale warehouse identification project within a newly developed distribution facility in Liverpool.
The project was delivered in collaboration with Chester’s leading warehouse storage systems suppliers and supported the operational requirements of an over-the-counter pharmaceutical healthcare provider.
Led by Gareth Fairhurst, a Director at Fortega, the project focused on creating a comprehensive warehouse identification system that would ensure efficient stock location management, operational accuracy, and long-term scalability within the new facility.
The Challenge.
The client required a complete warehouse identification solution to be implemented within a strict two-week installation window. The project had to be carefully coordinated alongside pallet racking installation teams to avoid delays and ensure the distribution centre remained on schedule for operational launch.
Key requirements included:
- Installation of over 25,000 rack location labels across multiple levels of pallet racking.
- Clear aisle identification signage throughout the warehouse.
- Accurate sequencing and validation of all location references.
- Safe installation methods for high-level applications.
- Seamless coordination with ongoing racking installation works.
The warehouse was fitted with a new Stow pallet racking structure, requiring precise planning to ensure all identification products aligned with the approved warehouse layout and inventory management strategy.
Solution Build
Fortega provided advice on the best materials, size and layout design of the labels, helping optimise performance and cost efficiency. Working closely with the storage systems supplier and installation teams, a structured process was developed to ensure quality and accuracy throughout the project.

Rack Location Labelling
A total of 25,099 rack location labels were installed across selective pallet racking throughout the facility.
The labels were produced using commercial grade polyester. Polyester is preferred by Fortega owing to the durability and stable nature of the material. It does not deform over time, ensuing the content and barcodes maintain performance for years.
Label designs included the reference for people to read clearly, an arrow to show which position the label references, and a high contrast barcode created to meet global barcode specifications. Colour was used to differentiate between pick locations and bulk storage on higher levels. Specialist installation teams used scissor lift platforms to access all rack levels safely and efficiently. Prior to installation, the approved label layouts were reviewed and verified to ensure correct positioning of every location identifier.
To maintain accuracy, the team conducted:
- Initial layout validation checks.
- Ongoing sequence verification for each aisle during installation.
- Final location identification audits upon project completion.
This systematic approach minimised the risk of labelling errors and ensured full alignment with the warehouse management system requirements.

Aisle Identification Signage
In addition to rack labelling, 68 aisle marker signs were installed on the ends of pallet racking aisles.
Installation teams again utilised scissor lifts to safely access elevated fixing positions, ensuring maximum visibility throughout the warehouse. The signage system was designed to support rapid navigation, efficient stock retrieval, and improved operational workflow.

Project Delivery
Despite the scale of the installation, the project was completed within the allocated two-week programme.
Success was achieved through:
- Detailed pre-installation planning.
- Close collaboration between Fortega, the storage systems supplier, and racking installation teams.
- Continuous quality assurance checks throughout the process.
Experienced installation personnel equipped to work safely at height.
Results
The completed warehouse identification system delivered:
- 25,099 accurately installed rack location labels.
- 68 highly visible aisle marker signs.
- Full validation of warehouse location sequencing.
- Improved warehouse navigation and stock location accuracy.
- A scalable identification framework to support future operational growth.
- Successful completion within the planned project timeframe.

Summary.
This project demonstrates Fortega’s capability to deliver complex warehouse identification solutions within demanding timescales and live project environments. Through careful planning, rigorous validation processes, and close collaboration with project partners, Fortega helped create a fully identifiable and operationally efficient distribution facility for a leading pharmaceutical healthcare provider.
The successful implementation provides the client with a robust foundation for inventory management, operational efficiency, and long-term warehouse performance.
